Change the Rotation x Locals Only Spring Previews

By Nicole Roberts and Phil Collins

The amount of Chicago talent releasing new music in the next few months is overwhelming. So overwhelming, in fact, that it takes two just to write about it! For these upcoming release previews, Locals Only has partnered with Change the Rotation in order to bring you more information about what's new in DIY music.

Death of Self
Look Elsewhere
Since the release of Bomb the Burbs, a split EP featuring four original songs from Bad Timing and Death of Self, in March of 2017, Death of Self fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the band’s first full-length record, Look Elsewhere. The album will contain 15 tracks, eight of which have never been heard before, and will include fan favorites, “Two Minutes,” “To The End,” “Look Elsewhere,” and “Antiseptic.” Long time Death of Self listeners can also look forward to newly recorded versions of “Newsflash,” “Allseeing Eye,” and “The Truth,” all of which have been released on previous EPs.

I wish I could assure you that your long wait for more of the 4-piece punk band’s frantic guitar riffs, tantalizing drum intros, and driving bass lines is over, but it’s not. The band has yet to set an official release date for Look Elsewhere, but has assured their fans that the album will be out sometime between February and March. In the meantime, you can listen to the band’s previous releases here as you hope for a Valentine’s gift from the boys in Death of Self. NR

Bloodletter
Under the Dark Mark
Chicago melodic thrash metal band Bloodletter has been ripping listeners’ ears to shreds since the release of their first demo in 2013. Five years later and with four EPs under their belts, the group was finally ready to tackle writing their first full-length record. And man, did they sure as hell succeed.

According to the band’s vocalist/guitarist, Pete Carparelli, Under the Dark Mark “has the aggression from our Malignancy record, the technicality of our self-titled record, and the melodic approach and sound from our Darkest Reaches EP, all mixed in there.” The influences from past releases are clearly there, but Under the Dark Mark presents a side of Bloodletter that listeners have never heard before. Musically, the ten new tracks are more technically thoughtful and polished than the band’s previous songs; lyrically, the songs address topics such as the occult, life and death, and the supernatural without coming off as cheesy or ironic thrash anthems.

With songs such as “Beyond Belief” that are guaranteed to summon chaotic circle pits and “The Seance,” one of my personal favorites, it’s safe to say that upcoming Bloodletter shows are about to be taken to an entirely new level. You can catch the band playing some of their new tunes on February 20th at Livewire (21+), or at the record’s release show on March 31st at the Subterranean in Wicker Park (17+). NR

Can’t wait until then? You can hear “Phantasmal Killer,” the seventh track off Under the Dark Mark, here:

Turnspit
Desire Paths

Chicago emo-tinged pop punks Turnspit release their debut full-length album via Dodgeball Records on February 16. Fans of last year’s Sincere Engineer or Oh My Snare LPs should gravitate toward this record. Meaningful lyrics and catchy melodies pervade. Split vocals between Gillian McGhee and Jason Swearingen create variety from one song to the next. Gillian takes lead vocals on the album opener, Jason on the second song and they both sing on the third track, “Walk Away.” I was lucky enough to get an early listen of the whole album and it rocks. Get ready for this one. You can check out the lyric video for “Breath Taking” here and listen to “Walk Away” here. Turnspit’s record release show is February 17 at the GMan Tavern with Retirement Party, Blood People, and Third Twin Sister. More info on that show here. Pre-order Desire Paths through Dodgeball Records. PC

The Kreutzer Sonata
The Gutters of Paradise

Local hardcore punks The Kreutzer Sonata return with their first full-length following some lineup changes. If you have seen them live lately, you know they have been playing a bunch of new songs. I am looking forward to finally hearing all these recordings. From what I have heard so far and seen at shows, the band is embracing their heavier side, making the melodic hooks that marked their previous releases fewer and further between. This is music for stomping cans and pushing people in a basement show. It has been three years since their last full-length came out (a couple 7-inches were released in the intervening years.) The band has changed and I am excited to hear it on record. The Gutters of Paradise comes out on February 14 through Don’t Panic Records & Distro, Collision Course Records and No Time Records. Pre-order it on the Kreutzer Sonata’s bandcamp page, where you can also listen to the songs “October Kids” and “Schlitz Faced.” PC

La Armada
Anti-Colonial Vol. 1
Hardcore group La Armada return with their second full-length album. This is a band that will just shred you to pieces, at live shows and on record. They originally formed in the Dominican Republic but have been based in Chicago since 2008. I cannot recommend seeing these guys live highly enough. The energy onstage combined with the propulsive music feeds rapidly into the crowd. If the video for “Fire” is any indicator, this new album is going to be full of rippers. Preorder Anti-Colonial Vol. 1 here. The album is self-released and comes out on March 30. Future pressings will be handled by Creep Records and Epidemic Records. La Armada joins Propagandhi and Iron Chic on an absolutely stacked tour in March. They stop at the Metro on March 3. More info on that show here. Be there or forever kick yourself. PC

This week, I considered the guests I've had on the show, as well as the artists who create the music I've been playing. I came to the conclusion that it's absolutely crucial to start incorporating more women and femme-presenting people and the music they're creating on Locals Only. Listen to this week's show to hear some of my favorite local chicks!

Nikki's "Stick To What Ya Know" playlist

There are times in every music lover's life when no matter how desperately they want to discover and listen to new music, they just can't. Sometimes, it feels best to stick to the trusted songs we know and love, and to listen to those songs on seemingly endless loops. For whatever reason, these are the songs I've been listening to on repeat for about a week (or more). From new releases that I've listened to six times in a row without shame to 90s ska/punk classics, without further ado, here's to stickin' to what ya know.

1. Surveillance // Bombflower

I'm a sucker for female fronted vocals, but everything else about this song rocks, too. It's currently my go-to song when I feel like having a one person mosh pit.

2. Freeway Time in LA County Jail // Sublime

Every time I hear this song, I consider getting an "Angry Dogs are Hungry Doggies" tattoo of a vicious Dalmatian.

3. Daisy // Wavves

"Daisy" was the first of three singles that have been released off Wavve's upcoming album, You're Welcome.

4. My Girlfriend is a Chola // Voodoo Glow Skulls

VGS killed it at Reggie's last Thursday. Special shout out to Evil Empire for a crazy opening set.

5. Sex and Candy // Marcy Playground

I sing this to myself, out loud, at least twice a day.

6. Rant // Bad Timing

I may or may not have listened to this song 4 times in a row yesterday. (But who's counting?) Every time I listen to this track, I get more stoked to see Bad Timing at The Weenie Hut with Chasing Chimera, Death of Self, The Audio Dead, Lever, and Habitats at the end of the month.

7. Way Too Much // Wavves

In case one Wavves song wasn't enough.

8. Making Breakfast // Twin Peaks

You ever get in that mood where you put on headphones and pretend every song you listen to is part of your very own soundtrack? This is my opening track for spring.

9. Song for a Friend // The Slaps

Finally, I had to show some love to my fellow DePaul students in The Slaps.

Melodic Mondays: Nahuales Underground

Nahuales Underground is a 4-piece suburban band that features Loco Dub on guitar/vocals, Ismael Echeverria on bass, Chente Echeverria on guitar/vocals, and Mikas on drums. The band's mix of Spanish and Midwest influences combine to create an energetic sound that includes elements of ska, metal, reggae, and punk rock. After playing locals shows and recording demos and EPs for nearly a decade, Nahulaes Underground decided it was time to release a full-length LP. Thus, Politico Incorrect was created. This collection of 10 songs addresses social and cultural situations, and also includes a few satirical love songs. The band describes this album as fitting "the Chicago style"-loaded with punk, grunge, and just a hint of ska, which "perfectly fits the concept of a Mexican-American band."

Bomb the Burbs Release Show Proves A Success

The 5 band lineup rocked the newest DIY venue, The Liquor Store.
By Nikki Roberts

On Saturday, March 25th, Bad Timing and Death of Self held a release show for their split EP, Bomb the Burbs, at The Liquor Store, a new DIY venue in Brighton Park. The show's lineup consisted entirely of suburban based bands, which drew quite a diverse crowd. It was encouraging to see such a large margin of age groups come together to support local music.

The show kicked off with Travesura, a 4-piece band from the suburbs of Brookfield and LaGrange Park, who was responsible for drawing much of the younger crowd. Travesura's sound is influenced by a mix of genres, including hardcore, ska, and skate punk bands. For this being the band's second live performance, the group was impressively put together and brought a lot of energy to their set.

"We had such a great turn out for a five band record release show," said Travesura's bassist Will Geisert. "We had a different group of people at the front of every band singing along to something."

After Travesura's set, Infinite Knottage took the stage. A folk punk duo, Infinite Knottage excited the crowd with intense vocals, harmonica solos, and rhythmic washboarding. The band closed with their single, "Crazies, Man." The duo's amped up set elicited a much more aggressive reaction than Travesura's smooth energy did, making them to perfect transition to The Electric Excuse Me's.

"Holy shit, that show was absolutely awesome! There was a lot of people I knew and a lot I didn't know. The venue was pretty gnarly as well and the vibe there was nothing like I'd seen at any other DIY venue," said Zach Waswil, guitarist/vocalist of Infinite Knottage.

The final band to play before the premiere of Bomb the Burbs was The Electric Excuse Me's.  Self described as a "Lake Michigan Doom Surf" band, this 3-piece played a killer set. Unlike the variety of ska, punk, and rock bands that preformed, The Electric Excuse Me's brought their own unique garage-surf sound to The Liquor Store.

"The venue was pretty solid," said vocalist/guitarist Michael Orellana of The Electric Excuse Me's. "We've played at a lot of interesting spots, from a literal corn field to rich kids' basements, but never at a modified liquor store. The crowd was pretty cool, too. It felt like a more structured Jurassic Park kinda crowd. I wish I could have stayed longer."

After The Electric Excuse Me's exited the stage, Death of Self was the first to premiere their share of Bomb the Burbs. After playing a set consisting of songs from The Truth and a few new songs from their upcoming album, Look Elsewhere, the band played their half of the split release. Their contribution to the split includes two new songs, "Allseeing Eye" and "Newsflash," as well as a cover of Bad Timing's "Ugly." My favorite out of the two new original tracks is "Allseeing Eye." The song features a killer guitar solo and its lyrical content addresses Big Brother's constant surveillance. The band's set ended as usual, with guitarist Nick Feltes running out into the crowd.

"The turnout of the show was amazing for just a few kids like us running it. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and loved all the bands that played. It was great meeting a lot of new people and starting to make better connections with the scene. So far, we have received great feedback about our performance and our split with Bad Timing," said Death of Self drummer, Joe Ott.

Bad Timing played a reversal of Death of Self's set by first playing their half of Bomb the Burbs and proceeding to end the show with crowd favorites from their EP Busy Doin Nuthin. The second half of the split consists of two brand new Bad Timing tracks, "Rant" and "Kill Your T.V." Of these two original songs, my favorite is "Rant," partly because the circle pit during this song was insane. In addition to being a great song to mosh to, "Rant" displays another side to Bad Timing's musical style because it is a bit out of touch with the sound the band established in their first EP. Omitting the danceable ska grooves, this song is angrier and more aggressive than their previous releases, blending ska with hardcore punk. Additionally, the band has always covered serious social and political concerns in their music, but the lyrics of "Rant" take this thematic content to another level.

The 3-piece ska group also covered "Apocalypse Now" off of Death of Self's The Truth. I love seeing local artists cover each other's work, both live and in recordings. It's a great indicator of growing unity within the scene, especially within the music scene of the Chicagoland suburbs.

Bad Timing and Death of Self will be playing on April 29th at The Weenie Hut in Logan Square. You can get more details about the show here. To read an interview with Bad Timing and Death of Self about their recording process, click here.
